Antique 22 Large Victorian Tableau Vivant Photograph 3 Young Girls in a Garden
Offering a wonderful, antique, wood framed Victorian photograph featuring three sisters in a tableau vivant garden setting. This was found in my great aunt’s storage and none of us know who these girls were or where she got this large framed photo. I have personally never seen an antique photograph this large (actual photo 14″ X 16″) and framed under glass. The solid wood, hand carved frame is quite heavy and was once very ornate. It was carved with a lot of curliques, scrolls and arches and these are now chipped here and there with only traces of what must have once been gilding. I don’t know anything about Victorian photography so I can only describe what I see. The photograph is entrancing and a knowledgeable collector told me it is a tableau vivant. The girls are young and quite lovely and seem to be enjoying a day in the air of a private garden. This is very different from the other antique photos I have seen which are always very staged and formal. These girls aren’t even facing the camera and it has the look of a casual shot taken without their knowledge. They seem to be playing a game and laughing. They remind me of Longfellow’s poetic description of his three daughters. “Grave Alice, laughing Allegra and Emily with golden hair”. The photograph is framed and under glass. The backing is slabs of old wood. The full piece measures 20″ X 22″. The visible portion of the photo measures 14″ X 16″.
