Siegfried Enkelmann rare vintage gelatin silver print, Harald Kreutzberg, 1930s
Siegfried Enkelmann rare vintage gelatin silver print, Harald Kreutzberg, 1930s. Siegfried Enkelmann’s work has its place in numerous collections of modern photography (Here: the two photographs in the foreground, at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Germany). Siegfried Enkelmann is considered the leading dance photographer of the 1940s thru the 60s in Germany. “Der Ahnende” (The apprehensive). Photomontage combining a dramatic expression of dancer and choreographer Harald Kreutzberg with a street scene photographed in Berlin in the late 1930s showing SA (the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party) marching. This is an extremely rare and shockingly political image by dance photographer Siegfried Enkelmann! It is unknown but possible that this artwork was never published! According to Enkelmann’s nomenclature this photomontage was created in the late 1930s, or at least the photographs were taken at that time. But considering how extremely dangerous it was to create politically critical artwork in Nazi Germany it is likely that Enkelmann only combined these photographs after the fall of the Nazi regime. Late 1930s, possibly late 1940s. 11.75″ x 9.5″ (circa 29.8 x 24 cm).
