Bibelot is a late nineteenth century word derived from the French word bel beautiful, meaning a small item of beauty, curiosity or interest. The word ephemera is derived from the sixteenth century Greek word ephmera meaning a printed or hand written paper not meant to be retained for a long period of time. Rare cabinet photo by Saunders of the Chief of the Southern Cheyennes, Mad Wolf; or, Hahk o ni, or, Miv a wo nih or “wolf that has no sense” (1825 1903), standing holding his hat. Identified in black ink as “Madwolf – Cheyenne Chief” on the front and again on the reverse. There is an additional inscription in the Cheyenne language, written in pencil on the front reading III-I-a. The same inscription has been added to the back. These matching inscriptions are suggested to be in the hand of Mad Wolf. Born in 1825 he was considered one of the bravest and wisest men in the Cheyenne tribe; he rode with White Shield to meet Custer’s troops. Mad Wolf rode with the first war party to strike into Mexico in 1853, surviving a disastrous battle with Mexican lancers and led a war party in 1865 against Union General Patrick E. Mad Wolf finally surrendered to General Nelson A. Miles on February 10, 1875, along with other followers of Medicine Water. Size: 16.5 x 11 cm approx. Photos form part of the description.
