The Martin D-18 stands as one of the true original dreadnoughts introduced by Martin in 1932. The D-18 made a switch from a 12-fret to a 14-fret instrument in 1934 and has stayed largely the same since, with just the occasional change in wood source or cosmetic detail. Since the D-18 uses Mahogany, it is thought to have a somewhat crisper sound with more definition in the top-end. This is my favorite possession. I have had it since it was brand new and still do occasional country gigs with it. I would say this fine instrument has a uniquely mellow bass tone that is wonderful for backing up a singer. The chords are resonant and full. It has excellent tone for picking in the mid and high ranges as well. This super sounding guitar is apparently a 1943 model, serial number 84655. It is no wonder that a 1942 D18 was played by Elvis, Lester Flatt, and Doc Watson. The sound of this instrument just seems to tell you that it is suitable for use by a top country/western star. Whenever there was a social setting with other Martin guitar players, virtually all would comment on the great sound quality of this old D18. The photos of this guitar are finally on the listing. The neck and fingerboard are what I would call just right. The overall appearance is excellent considering the guitar’s age. This instrument was gone over with a fine tooth comb by the Martin Company in the 80’s. It was pretty much made as good as new. They refinished the top, but left any old “battle-scars” visible. There were hardly any, as you can see. The one visible scratch on the top was done since the Martin refinish, and it is just a surface scratch. They chose to leave the back finish as it was, and there is a spot where the finish is pretty much worn off. The guitar is still a beauty.
